Press Release - Emergency Philippines – The Filipino community residing in Italy is at the forefront to bring support to the families, children and women in particular, who are affected by the Typhoon Haiyan

The Filipino Womens' Council and the Italian section of Defence for Children, have taken action to raise funds to support the people affected by the super-typhoon-Haiyan Yolanda in 36 provinces in the Philippines.

The typhoon Haiyan struck and devastated five Philippine Islands, particularly the islands of Leyte and Samar, leaving behind more than ten thousand deaths and a large number of displaced persons.

The over 160.000 Filipinos living in Italy, working and helping Italian families, are trying  to cope with the tragedy that involve their relatives, friends and acquaintances.

“We are trying to understand and identify immediate necessities and appropriate actions in order to reach quickly those who need immediate support” affirms Charito Basa, leader of the Filipino Women’s Council, conferred in 2002 with “Cavaliere della Repubblica” (Knightess of the Republic) of the Italian Republic by Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, “The Filipino migrants appeal to the Italian families and individuals to support the families and children, who are the mostly vulnerable in situations like this.”
