From 6 to 31 May, the Committee against Torture (CAT) convenes its 50th Session of monitoring implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (the “Torture Convention”) by its State parties. Within the session, States party to the Torture Convention are obliged to submit reports to CAT on how the rights are being implemented in their country. CAT examines each report and addresses its concerns and recommendations to the State party. Defence for Children International (DCI) focuses on the following countries, under review at this CAT session: Bolivia, Japan, and the Netherlands. Moreover, on 7 May, CAT celebrates 25 years since its first session with two debates on main achievements and challenges facing it, and on obligation of States to provide redress for victims of torture.
